Harriman State Park
Trout Architects/Chartered and their prime consultant EDAW, were tasked with developing a new master plan of future growth and development for this Harriman State Park in Island Park, Idaho. New construction included an entry road, ranch gate signage, and parking areas.
Comprised of five different building projects totaling over 10,800 SF, work on this project included historic preservation, adaptive reuse, and new construction of park buildings. These projects added additional park overnight accommodations, a commercial kitchen, dining and meeting halls.
Historic preservation work on the Harriman’s personal 1940’s cottage, now a museum, includes re-pointing of original lava stone masonry, re-chinking of log work, re-glazing of original window panes and stabilization of the wood work on the window frames and sills. Structural elements that have been damaged or broken during the heavy snows are being repaired while temporary structural supports are installed during the winter months while the residence is closed to the public.
The two Dude Barns, constructed before 1917, become a new Dining Facility and Meeting Hall. The buildings were completely disassembled with all logs, flooring, and roofing material collected and stored. The original log walls which were cataloged diagrammed and refitted to the outside of the new framing in the same configuration as the historic barns. The original floors were re-milled and re-used throughout all the new construction of these projects.
Additional new quest lodging was also constructed and attached to the Meeting Hall by an exterior arcade. This new structure surrounds an open court and fire pit area.
Currently participating in a LEED certification pilot program for rural park projects, the projects extensively recycled existing buildings and materials. All products were selected for non-voc qualities. Dual-flush toilets and other water conservation measures were incorporated.
